Leaving Canada under maintained status

The holidays are approaching, and many are eager to travel outside of Canada to explore other countries, but the permit hasn't arrived yet! This is a common question among international students and workers: can I travel outside of Canada while waiting for my visa extension? The truth is, there's no single answer, but rather a response for each specific situation. If a temporary resident applies for an extension of their study or work permit before it expires, they are authorized to study or work under certain conditions while their renewal application is being processed, and only while they remain in Canada. Can I travel with maintained status? You can travel, but it's important to know that upon leaving Canada, your maintained status expires. To return, you will need a valid visa (if required for citizens of your country) or an eTA. Upon your return, you will not be able to work or study until your study or work permit renewal is approved. In general, we recommend against traveling while on maintained status. Rights granted by maintained status: Maintained status for family members. There is no automatic extension; each family member must apply for an extension of their stay, without exception. The application can be made for everyone at the same time. Be sure to review the eligibility and requirements for each family member, as they vary greatly depending on each situation.
